My longtime friend Erin Bowman (who has an excellent Substack for writers!) just visited, and it was so lovely to see her. We worked, we “played,” and we used each other’s writer brains to talk out story ideas and discuss our futures in this unstable industry.

My number one piece of advice to writers is always to find a community. I have been so lucky to have so many amazing author friends—many of whom I met before I had an agent. We moved through the “ranks” together. And we’ve been through all the highs and lows together.

I’ve of coursed picked up many new author friends along the way, and I talk every single day to these people. Fellow writers are the only ones who can fully understand the challenges and triumphs of this creative life. And having that support, though the inevitable highs and lows, is so valuable.1
