Finding your social media spot...or not!
Don't forget the Magical Cookies! 🍪
1. C’est le weekend!
Happy Friday! I’m going to quickly tackle two AMA questions before I have to take ye olde doggie to the vet. (‘Twas only yesterday she was a puppy. 🥲)
ALSO, please enjoy this reel I made. I cannot believe how much time I spent assembling it for the Hunter Trials.
No, really: PLEASE WATCH IT SO I FEEL LIKE IT WAS WORTH MY TIME.
Moving on! We’re going to talk about social media and newsletters today!
2. To tweet or not to tweet?
Kristen asked:
I recently joined Twitter to start building a platform/profile, and I am terrible at it. Any ideas for how to make it feel more natural, what content to provide until there is a book to advertise, etc.?
Look, if it's not comfortable, I always say don't force it. I have basically given up on most social media these days because, even though I love my readers on each platform, I find it so draining to expose myself to all the OTHER noise that comes with it. This was a huge part of why I moved to Substack—because I hope I can nurture the things I care about most for the readers who are dedicated the most, and we can do it in a safe, protected space that belongs just to us.
That said, I suggest you don't give up on Twitter quite yet! Give it some time and see if it becomes more natural. It takes a long, long, LONG time to build a platform and find your readers.
And ultimately, you might find that Twitter just isn't the spot for you. Instagram might be more your speed, or Facebook or TikTok...OR BLOGGING!! You could always start a Substack of your own. 😉
Basically, the last thing you want is for it to feel like a chore. Just like my magical cookie philosophy applies to stories 🍪, if you’re not enjoying what you post online, then no one will enjoy reading it either.
So I suggest trying a few things and being patient. But also give yourself permission to say, Nah, none of this is for me, if it doesn’t ultimately bring you joy. Trust me: you can sell books without an online platform!!
